Not everyone knows it, but children and not just adults can experience hearing loss and in fact anyone at any age. Most of the time, hearing loss is a slow and gradual process of losing the sense of hearing in one or both the ears. Some loss of hearing cases though are serious enough to be permanent. The first thing to do when you are having hearing problems is to go see your physician about it. The first step the doctor will do is to pinpoint the exact location of the hearing problem via tests. Only when the type of hearing problem is determined can the appropriate hearing treatment be prescribed to the subject. When mentioning hearing loss, it isn't just one kind as there are many different types of hearing loss. The kind or type of hearing loss is based on which part of the hearing pathway is affected. Hearing loss depends on what part it affects and this also will determine how easy it is to be treated. A blockage or problem that arises from the transmission of sound from the outer ear to the inner ear along the middle ear is called conductive hearing loss. Any failures along the hearing pathway, including the ear canal, the outer and middle ear parts, the tiny bones, all fall under the conductive hearing disorder. A person who has this type of disorder can be considered lucky in a way, as this is the easiest to treat or manage with hearing aids. A hearing disorder that is complex, most of the time untreatable and is the exact opposite of conductive hearing loss is called sensorineural hearing loss. Problems in the inner ear area like the cochlea or where sound is transformed into neural signals all fall under sensorineural hearing loss. The inner ear is the most important part in the hearing process as this is the part where sound is converted from vibrations to signals. A person's hearing believe or not can also be affected by problems in the central nervous system and this is called central hearing loss. People who have this central hearing disorder hear normally like everyone else, but being abnormal in a way, because they cannot seem to process, interpret or understand what is being said. This form of abnormality cannot still be treated and is only managed by making sure the environment the subject is in is not very noisy. Believe it or not, emotional problems and psychological problems can also take a person's hearing away, this condition is called functional hearing loss. People inflicted with this disorder just don't seem to hear even though they have perfect or even better than normal hearing. A person who has this condition, is vulnerable to being diagnosed incorrectly as it is extremely hard for a doctor to accurately diagnose this. A person has mixed hearing loss when he or she has both conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing impairment in the same ear. The conductive hearing problem can be treated easily in mixed hearing loss. With the current state of our medicinal technology, there isn't much that can be done to relieve a person of sensorineural problems. Ask anyone who has hearing problems and they will be the first to tell you hearing loss can change your life. No amount of science can beat simply being aware and taking these risks seriously. The best way is prevention, and this is through checkups and full body examinations.
