First Openly Gay Man Recommended For Federal Judge

By: .JohnSmith.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer is recommending that President Obama nominate Daniel Alter as a federal judge. He reads like your average judge (do the words average and judge really work together?) with an education Columbia College and then graduation from Yale Law School. Alter served six years as an assistant U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York and as the national director of the Anti-Defamation League. So far not surprising. But wait – he’s gay!
The New York Senator stated that “His outstanding leadership skills, his commitment to justice, and his extensive experience make him an exceptional choice for a position on the federal bench,” said Schumer. “I’m proud to nominate Daniel Alter. Period. But I am equally proud to nominate him because he is a history-maker who will be the first openly gay male judge in American history.” As Schumer is the senior senator from New York and Presidents traditionally follow the judicial nomination recommendations of the senior senator we can assume that Daniel Alter will become the first ever openly gay federal judge.

Has the United States which has long been accused of lagging behind the rest of the western world in the recognition of gays in public office. Hopefully this is another step forward for America.
