By Helen Rowe The song, "Auld Lang Syne," is sung at the stroke of midnight at most New Year parties. I have never understood the words and only remember the first 4 lines, well, you only sing or mutter the words you remember once a year!! Written in 1741 by Robert Burns, "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long ago." So this song is about remembering past years and the people in our life’s. Not a bad way to start the year. Auld Lang Syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll take a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne We twa hae run aboot the braes And pou'd the gowans fine; we've wander'd mony a weary foot Sin' auld lang syne We two hae paidled i' the burn, Frae mornin' sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin' auld lang syne And here's a hand, my trusty friend, And gie's a hand o' thine; We'll take a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll take a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne Why then, do we complicate things by making New Years Resolutions? We wait for the beginning of a new year to start or give up something i.e. a better diet, no smoking, more exercise etc etc. By mid January some of us are likely to have failed our new gaol with resultant guilt. I admire those of you who stick to it and change your life style. Weak willed, and knowing that cutting down on my consumption of red wine and chocolate would improve my health along with giving up cigarettes. I cheat and make the same resolution each time. It’s a simple one, and only I know if it’s achieved. I pledge to stop procrastinating. No more excuses to myself for not doing the things I should!!! This year I will do and not to waste time thinking about doing. The pleasure of reading a good book is spoilt when laced with guilt of the hated chores undone. No more endless lists of “must do’s” just action……….Then there are the missed or postponed phone calls to friends and relations, the letters and emails unsent. The shame or regret is a waste of energy. I know I will trip over my halo long before the year is up. Yet I hope that I will get a second chance come December 31! -Happy New Year- May your aspirations be achieved………..
