Winning Over Cancer - Lance Armstrong

By: Ellesse

Can you imagine contracting last stage cancer right at the culmination of your career or life? It is a rather disastrous consideration however nevertheless it's something that could be pretty real. The truth is, it's so real that it happened to celebrated professional cyclist Lance Armstrong.
Back in 1996, after winning the World cycling Championships, Lance Armstrong was at the peak of his job. He was recognized as the first qualified cyclist to clock the record along with the unsurpassed margin in the United States Nationwide Road competition Competitions. He has moreover just got a fresh two year bond for $2.5 millions along with the French - a world distinguished biking team.
All along, Lance aspired to cycle for the French team. Getting the contractual bond was a goal come true, however, before this can be realized, it was crashed. He was diagnosed with final stage testicular cancer. The cancer had gone to his lungs and brain and a critical operation was imperative. Or else, he could lose his life. Even then, doctors believed that likelihood of him entirely surviving the cancer was no more than 3%.
Never Yield
But Lance thought otherwise. No matter what the doctors feel or said, he was adamant not to let their prediction influence his life expectancy. From the time when he was a small child, he has been drilled by his single mother not to throw in the towel easily and persevere right through the end in things he go for. These similar standards are the ones which guided him down this path of accomplishment in his cycling profession. His mummy has always been his dedicated supporter. One time just as he was about to quit towards the end of a triathlon competition, it was his mummy's encouragement that saw him concluding the tournament by walking. He might have been the last few to finish the triathlon but at the very least, he persisted right though the concluding line. It was this same never throw in the towel will that saw him challenging his illness. Subsequent to the surgical procedure, he went on to take up chemotherapy sessions. Which ended up being long and excruciating sessions. He suffered a huge weight loss and could not even move around on his racing bike in the neighbourhood. Nevertheless, that did not hinder him from being spiritually encouraged by his illness.
What A Blessing In Disguise!
After the chemotherapy treatments were over and he was finally found to be completely clear - a near incredulous achievement, he went back to professional cycling. The training was surprisingly conducive as he realized that his losing 17 pounds allowed him to tackle stage races a lot more easily than he used to.
In the past, he had only taken part in one other similar tournament (which was the Tour de France) but had to withdraw due to injuries and extreme exhaustion in the other years. However that time round, he observed something was very different in the way he rode through the paths along the Blue Rider Mountains. Finally, he was ready to be a world class cycling professional who can genuinely rise up to the challenge regardless the terrains, weather or nature of the races.
That intuition turned out to be on the correct spot as he went on to get the maillot jaune - the yellow jersey worn by the leading professional cyclist for the Tour de France in 1999. From the beginning to the finish. The other cyclists overtook him towards the middle part but he eventually caught up once they're into the the Alps. The same site where he used to give up in the past competitions. He eventually won the tournament.
And for the next four years, Lance Armstrong went on to clinch the Tour de France championship. He later wrote to say if he was given the alternative of either defeating cancer or securing the Tour de France title, he would in fact pick the former. Why? As without which, he would never be able to take on doctor's predictions over his survival chances and instill faith and strong hope in himself. Splendid, is not it?
What Have We Learned From Lance Armstrong?
That challenges and adversities in life are inevitable. We can't stay away from them but if we choose to take them on together with a dash of strong perservance and resolve, we will see a side of ourselves that we've never seen before, when we defeat them.
Think of problems as the crucial nutritional vitamins that nourishes our body and mind for even greater challenges. Since there is no way we can shun them, no matter how we dodge, why don't we just take them on together with a dash of courage and knock it down individually?
It's also through Armstrong's story that we learnt the importance of gratitude. It's important to be grateful for the little things we have in life. Are we appreciative of the folks in our lives, the conditions we're in (no matter how fine or bad it seems) and very simple fact that we are still alive? Thanks a lot, Armstrong for reminding me of this. And those of you reading this, let's remember Lance's story in our hearts and by no means forget his strong-minded will!
